What Makes a Pool Turn Green
Green pool water is almost always caused by algae. Algae spores are present in virtually every outdoor pool at all times. What keeps them from growing is proper sanitizer levels — specifically enough free chlorine to kill algae before it can establish. When sanitizer levels drop below that threshold algae multiplies rapidly and the water turns green, sometimes within a single day.
Why Sanitizer Levels Drop
Sunlight. UV rays break down free chlorine quickly. A pool without adequate stabilizer can lose most of its chlorine within hours of direct sun exposure. This is one of the most common causes of green pools in the South Bay during summer.
Heat. Warm water accelerates chlorine demand. A pool that required a certain chemistry routine in April may need significantly more attention in July.
Heavy use. Bather load and organic material consume chlorine. A pool used heavily over a weekend can burn through sanitizer faster than a weekly visit can keep up with.
Missed or insufficient service. If a weekly service visit is skipped, delayed, or rushed without proper chemistry adjustment, chlorine levels can fall to the point where algae begins establishing before the next visit.
Rain. Rainfall dilutes pool chemistry and can drop sanitizer levels significantly in a short period.
How Fast Does It Spread

How to Fix a Green Pool
Green pool recovery requires testing current water chemistry, adjusting pH and alkalinity so treatment works as effectively as possible, treating the pool to kill active algae, brushing all surfaces to expose algae colonies to sanitizer, running the filter continuously until the water clears, and cleaning the filter as it collects dead algae. Depending on severity full recovery can take one to three service visits over several days.
