The main parts of pool water balance
Sanitizer
Chlorine controls bacteria and algae. The amount needed depends on sunlight, pool use, temperature, debris and conditioner.
pH
pH affects swimmer comfort, chlorine effectiveness, scaling and corrosion. It naturally changes over time and may rise faster in some pools.
Total alkalinity
Alkalinity helps buffer pH. A level that is too low can allow rapid swings, while a level that is too high can contribute to rising pH.
Calcium hardness
Calcium helps determine whether water is likely to dissolve calcium from surfaces or leave scale behind.
Conditioner
