What to Ask a Pool Company Before Hiring Them

Published August 5, 2026 · By Magic Blue Pools

Choosing a pool service company feels straightforward until something goes wrong. A company that looked fine on paper turns out to skip visits, dump chemicals without testing, and disappear when there is a problem. Knowing what to ask before you sign up can save you thousands in repair costs and months of frustration.

Start With Water Chemistry

The single most important question to ask any pool company is: what is your approach to water chemistry?

Most pool companies talk about cleaning — skimming, brushing, and vacuuming. Those tasks matter, but they are visible. What you cannot see is whether the water is actually balanced. And improperly balanced water causes more damage to your pool than any amount of debris ever will.

Poorly balanced water corrodes metal equipment parts. It etches plaster and pebble finishes. It damages saltwater chlorinator cells, which cost $200 to $700 to replace. It creates conditions where algae can establish between visits even when the pool looks clear. These are expensive problems that develop slowly and invisibly — until they are not invisible anymore.

Ask any company you are considering: what parameters do you test on every visit? A thorough answer covers free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer. A vague answer — “we check the chlorine” — is a red flag.

Ask How They Document Service

One of the most common complaints about pool service companies is that homeowners have no idea whether the technician actually showed up. No report, no photo, no confirmation — just an assumption that the pool was serviced because it still looks okay.

Ask specifically: do you send a service report after each visit? Do you include a photo of the pool? Do you document what was done and what was observed? A company that provides a written report and photo after every visit is accountable in a way that companies without reporting simply are not. You should never have to guess whether your pool was serviced.

Ask About Contracts and Cancellation

Some pool companies require long-term service contracts. Before signing anything ask whether the agreement is month-to-month or locked in for a set term. Ask what the cancellation policy is and whether there are penalties for stopping service. A company confident in the quality of their work does not need to lock you in to keep your business.

Ask About Licensing and Insurance

Pool service technicians in California should be properly licensed and insured. Ask for the company’s license number and verify it. This protects you if something goes wrong during a service visit.

Ask How Long They Have Been Serving Your Area

A company that has been servicing pools in your specific neighborhood for years understands local conditions — the marine layer, the wind patterns, the water hardness, the seasonal chemistry changes. A company new to the area or based far from it may not.

The Bottom Line

Price matters, but it should not be your primary filter. A company that charges less and skips proper chemistry testing is saving you money now and costing you significantly more later. The right question is not who is cheapest — it is who is protecting your pool investment the best.
